During the next two weeks, the Towson University Police Department will enforce seat belt laws on campus to support the ?Buckle Up America? campaign. This is a statewide campaign to increase seat belt usage by operators and passengers of motor vehicles. ?Buckle Up America? takes place from Monday, May 24 to Sunday, June 6.
Maryland has a primary seat belt law. This means that police officers are able to ticket drivers and/or adult front seat passengers for not wearing a seat belt even if no other violation is observed. The law pertains to the driver and front seat passenger next to the door, each or both of whom may receive a ticket for not wearing a seat belt. A person may not transport a child younger than 16 years of age unless the child is secured in a child safety seat, or a vehicle?s seat belt in any seating position in all vehicles.
Maryland?s law requires that any child younger than six years of age (regardless of weight) or who weighs 40 pounds or less (regardless of age) has to be secured in a federally approved safety seat according to the safety seat and vehicle manufacturers? instructions.
