The Office of Undergraduate Research supports undergraduate research through three competitive funding programs: research grants, travel grants, and small project awards. All original scholarly and creative activity appropriate to any discipline is eligible for funding. This includes, for e.g., research in the natural sciences, artistic performances, and works of art.
Research Grants
Research grants, up to $500 per project, are awarded on a competitive basis to undergraduate students engaged in scholarly research activities under the mentorship of Towson University faculty members. Research funds may be used for supplies, books, software, equipment, and travel as appropriate to the project. Projects may be carried out over one or two semesters and should involve close collaboration of the student and faculty member.
Travel Grants
The competitive travel grant program allows students to apply for up to $500 to attend a professional meeting whereby the student will be the primary presenter. Requests larger than $500 may be considered if the application provides a justifiable need for additional funds.
Small Project Awards
Small project awards up to $100 are granted on a competitive basis. Funds may be used for supplies, books, software, equipment and fees, as appropriate to the project.
Grant applications are reviewed by the University Undergraduate Research Committee comprised of 10 faculty members spanning the different colleges across campus.
There are two application deadlines per year. Applications are due the 4th Friday from the start of the semester (i.e., September 20, 2013 and February 21, 2014).
