New Orleans Before And After: The Geology of the Katrina Disaster

On Thursday, May 11th, at 3:00 p.m. in Smith Hall, Room 420 Dr. Rachel Burks of the Physics, Astronomy & Geosciences Department will be presenting a seminar on “New Orleans Before and After: The Geology of the Katrina Disaster.”

Dr. Burks will present an illustrated talk on the geological causes and effects of Hurricane Katrina on her hometown of New Orleans. Photographs taken before and after the hurricane dramatically illustrate the devastating impact of the floodwaters that filled most of the city. Was this catastrophic deluge avoidable? Or was it inevitable in a city that lies below sea level? How and why did the levee system fail? How can the contaminated sediment deposited by Katrina be removed and cleaned up? How much of New Orleans should be rebuilt, knowing it will very likely flood again?
