Japanese Butoh Dance–Scandal Reborn as Freedom–this Saturday

As part of their North American Tour 2005, world-renowned and acclaimed Butoh artist Ko Murobushi and his new company Ko & Edge Co. will perform Handsome Blue Sky (Bibo no Aozora) on Saturday, September 24 at 8p.m. at the Stephens Hall Theatre. Having received rave reviews in Japan, Handsome Blue Sky is certain to astound audiences here. Theater faculty Naoko Maeshiba will conduct a Q&A session after the performance.

First performed to a scandalized audience in 1959, Butoh (Dance of Darkness) was decried by Japanese society as being violent, grotesque, erotic, and nihilistic. Years later, it is widely celebrated and practiced as a powerful new art form that seeks a free way of moving that is honest to the body and to its experience of being–to be ?reborn always and everywhere.?

Murobushi will give a master class on Sunday from 10am-12pm in the Movement Studio, Center for the Arts. Pre-registration is required. Call 410-704-2807.

$20 General; $17 TU faculty & staff and senior citizens; $12 students & AA&CC Members; $6 TU students with valid ID.
