TOWSON, Md. ? Infielder Gary Helmick (Northeast H.S./Severn, Md.) and catcher Jason Stifler (North Harford H.S./Jarrettsville, Md.), a pair of seniors on the 2009 Towson University baseball team, have signed contracts with the Baltimore Orioles and have reported to their minor league affiliates.
Helmick, a first team All-Colonial Athletic Association shortstop as a senior, has been assigned to the Bluefield Orioles of the Pioneer League. Stifler, a two-year starter at catcher for the Tigers, will join the Aberdeen Ironbirds of the New York-Penn League.
?We?re very pleased that Gary and Jason are getting a chance to play professionally,? says Towson University Coach Mike Gottlieb, who led the Tigers to a 28-25 record in 2009. ?Dean Albany, a regional scout for the Orioles, has seen Gary and Jason play on a number of occasions. His familiarity with them made the Orioles the most attractive option for Gary and Jason. This is a great opportunity for them and we know they will represent our University and our baseball program very well.?
