For the first time ever, the Tiger football team is nationally-ranked in the pre-season among all NCAA FCS teams by Street & Smith’s College Football Magazine. The Tigers are ranked 17th in the magazine’s pre-season rankings.
The Tigers, who were 7-4 last season and nationally-ranked for most of the year, are one of five Colonial Athletic Association teams ranked in the top 25. New Hampshire is ranked third in the nation while Delaware is seventh. Massachusetts is ranked 12th, just ahead of the Tigers who are 17th. James Madison University is ranked 19th.
“It’s really nice to get that kind of respect,” said Coach Gordy Combs, who will be starting his 16th season as the Tigers’ head coach.
In addition, the Tigers were picked to finish second in the CAA’s Southern Division by Street & Smith’s Magazine. Delaware was selected to finish first while James Madison was tabbed to finish third. Richmond has been picked fourth while William & Mary is fifth and Villanova is sixth.
The Tigers open their season on August 30 against Central Connecticut.
