SOFTWARE TIP OF THE WEEK
Excel 2003/2007 – Handling leading zeros in number codes
You may sometimes enter numbers in Excel that have leading zeros. For example you may enter social security numbers or zip codes that require a leading zero. Unfortunately, Excel removes the leading zero when you may want it to remain in the spreadsheet. Below are steps to force the leading zero to remain visible in the spreadsheet.
1. Highlight the row, column or cells that you wish to format with leading zeros and right click. The Format Cells dialog box will appear.
2. Click on the Number tab.
3. Click on Custom under Category.
4. On the right, click under Type.
5. Type the desired custom format as defined below:
? For Social Security Numbers, type this custom format: 000?000?0000
? For ZIP codes, type this custom format: 00000
6. Click on OK.
