Escort Program Reminder

The Escort Program is a safety program specifically designed for individuals who would otherwise be forced to walk alone on campus. It is not a transportation program to use when University buses are not operating, or a substitute for the campus shuttle service. The information below describes the program.

The Escort Program aims to improve the safety of students, faculty and staff members traveling alone on campus at night. There are several services that begin at nightfall and last until daybreak. The first, known as SafeWalk, is a walking escort program wherein a Police Aide meets individuals at any location within the central campus area and escorts them to their destination or the nearest shuttle stop (whichever is shortest or most practical). All SafeWalk personnel are dressed in blue uniforms and equipped with radios. The SafeWalk program is used during the hours that the campus bus service is operating.

Between the hours of 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., the police department also operates a Ride-Van to safely transport individuals on campus. After 2 a.m. police officers and police aides provide escorts to individuals fearful of walking alone on campus. However, because emergency and urgent situations can occur at any given time requiring an officer’s immediate response, citizens requesting rides with officers must plan ahead and be flexible. Delays in police response for rides do occur. Please note that both the Ride-Van and escort services are intended for safety purposes, not transportation for individuals opposed to walking across campus.

To request a SafeWalk escort or Ride-Van pickup, call 410-704-SAFE (7233). For more information about escort programs, go to {http://www.towson.edu/adminfinance/facilities/police/campusescort.asp}.
