Towson University and dozens of college campuses across the country have been receiving thousands of targeted email that solicit personal information under the guise of a legitimate message. These emails are being used to phish for computer information such as usernames and passwords, though some ask for personal information such as a birth date. While these messages may look real, they are being used to send thousands of spam or junk mail messages. Responding to any of these messages could compromise your privacy and open spammers to utilizing your computer.
These messages do not have grammatical errors like most spam or phishing messages. They may contain statements such as, ?We are currently upgrading our database and e-mail account center? Warning! Account owner that refuses to update his or her account within seven days of receiving this warning will lose his or her account permanently.?
