As summer approaches, the Towson University Police Department (TUPD) would like to remind the campus community of building security and office safety practices. By practicing safe habits we can help reduce or limit crimes of opportunity, such as when a thief easily steals unattended valuables.
To protect against theft, stay aware of suspicious persons and situations at all times. Never assume that everyone in a campus building is a member of the community or providing a service to the university ? rely on your suspicions! Report suspicious persons to the TUPD immediately at 410-704-2133.
It?s also worthwhile to engrave your driver’s license number into personal items such as radios, calculators and laptops. This not only serves as a crime deterrent; it also helps the police identify ownership when stolen goods are recovered. Engraving tools are available from the TUPD.
During the summer, all members of the campus community are asked to assist in making our campus a safer place to work. Strive to keep office doors closed and locked. Secure personal belongings in a locked file cabinet or desk drawer, especially when you?re away from the office. Do not hang your purse or jacket on the back of your office door where it can be seen and quickly removed.
As always, avoid working alone in isolated areas and develop a safety network with other community members in your building. Call the TUPD to obtain an escort when leaving the office late at night. Remember, by limiting the opportunity for criminal acts, we minimize the chance of becoming victimized. You can make a difference.
