SOFTWARE TIP OF THE WEEK
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7: Automatically Clean Up Your Temporary Internet Files
Temporary Internet Files are records of all browsed content you have seen, heard, or downloaded from the Web. These records may include pictures, sounds, Web pages, cookies and more. All Temporary Internet Files, also referred to as the cache, are downloaded and stored in a folder located on your hard drive.
The main benefit of keeping the files is that if you visit the same web page often, Internet Explorer will bring up the files from the cache rather than getting them ?fresh? online, making the page appear to load quicker. The disadvantage is that the cache can also cause the web page to display ?old? content because updated files were not refreshed. Lastly, and perhaps equally important, since all cached files are stored on your hard drive, these files actually take up space and should be deleted to free up space on your hard drive.
Without completely disabling the Internet Temporary Files feature, you can have Internet Explorer 7 clear the cache automatically every time you close the browser.
To Automatically Empty Temporary Internet Files when Closing Internet Explorer 7
1. Open Internet Explorer 7.
2. Click the Tools > Internet Options from the menu bar.
3. In the multi-tabbed Internet Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
4. Scroll down to Security.
5. Check Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed.
6. Click OK to close Internet Options the dialog box. The new setting has been applied.
