The Life and Composition of Pauline Viardot Garcia (1821-1910)

Center for the Arts Recital Hall
Friday, November 5, 6 p.m.

Pauline Viardot-Garcia gained recognition as a mezzo-soprano in the 19th century. She published over ninety vocal works in her lifetime as well as other works for the piano and chamber ensemble. Dr. Leneida Crawford, mezzo-soprano, lectures on Viardot?s rich artistic life, complete with a multi-media visual presentation showcasing photographs and portraits from the artist?s history. In addition, Dr. Crawford presents a vocal recital showcasing a variety of Viardot?s art songs, assisted by Susan Ricci on piano. With texts from Russian, German, and French poets, Viardot?s versatility as a Lieder composer is evident. The singer and pianist are each given colorful and challenging parts. Whether the song is inspired by a Chopin Mazurka, a Brahms Hungarian Rhapsody, or her own imagination, Viardot?s pieces are refreshing and accessible to audiences.
