TIGER ATHLETICS: Towson Student-Athletes Top 3.00 GPA for Third Consecutive Semester

Student-athletes at Towson University compiled a very impressive 3.023 cumulative grade point average during the Spring, 2010 semester, bettering the 3.00 mark for the third semester in a row, according to Director of Athletics Mike Hermann.

Additionally, 11 of the Tigers? 20 intercollegiate teams had team G.P.A.?s over 3.00 during the semester while two other teams just missed earning a 3.0 team G.P.A.

?The academic achievement of our student-athletes is truly a team effort,? says Hermann. ?Of course, the majority of the credit goes to our student-athletes who have successfully balanced the requirements of the academic rigor at Towson with the commitment to an NCAA Division I athletic program.

?In addition, we have an outstanding faculty that works with our student-athletes to enable them to succeed both in the classroom and on the field of competition. Finally, we have coaches and an academic services staff that establish an atmosphere that emphasizes academic achievement among the student-athletes. The result of the powerful teamwork is a positive outcome for our student-athletes.?

Once again, the Tiger cross country team, coached by Roger Erricker, had the highest G.P.A. for the semester with a 3.528 mark. The cross country team, which was honored as an All-Academic Team by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association last month, was led by junior Brandi Gervais (Waynesville H.S./Cape Girardeau, Mo.) and sophomore Erika Griffith (Lenape H.S./Mt. Laurel, N.J.), each of whom had a 4.0 G.P.A. for the semester. A Pre-Dentistry major, Gervais has a perfect 4.00 G.P.A. for her college career. All but two members of the 13-person cross country roster earned a semester G.P.A. above 3.00

Gervais and Griffith were two of eight Tiger student-athletes who earned perfect 4.0 G.P.A.?s during the Spring semester.

Coach Erricker?s indoor and outdoor track teams tied for second place among the Tigers? intercollegiate athletic teams with a 3.468 G.P.A. during the Spring semester.

Coach Pat Mead?s Colonial Athletic Association champion women?s swimming and diving program had the fourth-highest G.P.A. among the Tigers? intercollegiate athletic teams. The swimmers posted a 3.453 team G.P.A.

The women?s soccer team and the field hockey team also achieved outstanding grades during the Spring semester. Coach Greg Paynter?s women?s soccer squad compiled a 3.451 team G.P.A. while Coach Michele Weber?s field hockey squad had a 3.446 semester G.P.A.

In addition, the Tiger tennis team earned a 3.274 G.P.A. while the ECAC champion gymnastics squad boasted a 3.264 G.P.A. The women?s lacrosse team (3.156), the women?s golf team (3.128) and the volleyball team (3.024) also had team G.P.A.?s above 3.00.

The Tiger men?s soccer team (2.974) and the softball team (2.941) fell just short of compiling a team G.P.A. above 3.00.

?Our teams enjoy being the best team on campus academically so there is some peer pressure involved,? says Erricker. ?Our upperclassmen set the tone. They lead by the example that they show in the classroom and the younger student-athletes learn quickly that this is the way we do things.?

In addition to Gervais and Griffith, six other Tiger student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 G.P.A.?s during the Spring semester.

Freshman diver Gabi LePore (Windsor H.S./Windsor, Conn.), phomore Margaret Macedonia (Bishop O?Connell H.S./Annandale, Va.) and freshman Wendy Sharer (Leesville Road H.S./Raleigh, N.C.) of the CAA champion Tiger women?s swimming and diving team earned 4.00 G.P.A?s in the Spring.

In addition, senior Jaclyn Tamburo (Dulaney H.S./Lutherville, Md.) and freshman Andrea Samlin (Bellmore John F. Kennedy H.S./Merrick, N.Y.) of the tennis team had perfect 4.0 G.P.A.?s. Senior defender Ellen Meara (Concord H.S./Wilmington Del.) of the field hockey squad also posted a 4.0 G.P.A. during the semester.

The Tiger women?s cross country team also owns the highest cumulative G.P.A. among the Tigers? 20 sports with a 3.543 G.P.A. The indoor track team and outdoor track teams are tied for second with a 3.431 G.P.A. while the women?s swimming and diving team (3.424) is fourth.

In fact, 13 of the Tigers? 20 intercollegiate teams have cumulative G.P.A.?s over 3.00.
