The African American Read-In
This annual event brings together communities of literature lovers to read aloud their favorite black authors. In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Brown vs. the Board selected readings will be available for you to read or feel free to bring your own poetry, prose or favorite author. Refreshments will be served.
February 4, 2004
7:00 p.m., Stephens Hall Theatre
In this concert length performance, the areas leading African Dance Company will perform an original work entitled “Life Forces.” The Company brings alive the intricate transitions of day-to-day living through the dance, song and rhythm of the “motherland.”
You don’t want to miss this “spectacular” performance.

Opening Reception – Exhibition – “Lafayette Square: Recognize, Respect, Renew”
A large format photographic exhibit that celebrates the cultural and history leaden neighborhood of Lafayette Square in Baltimore City is on loan from Baltimore Heritage, Inc. Written in the “stone” of the formidable architecture, including four Gothic revival stone churches and countless red brick three-story town homes that surround a verdant park is a visual testimony to its notable black residents and history makers.

Martin Luther King Celebration! George E. Curry Lecture – Reception to follow.
Curry, the Editor-in-Chief of the National Newspaper Association News Service and BlackPressUSA.com, will talk about the historical legacy of the Brown vs. the Board of Education decision and renewed interest in issues of race equality and the state of our public educational system.
