Clarification on Spoofed Virus E-mails Sent Sunday and Monday

Over the weekend, the Office of Technology Services successfully detected and removed a virus from the university e-mail system. The attempted virus distribution used a process called “e-mail spoofing,” in which a sender impersonates a legitimate person. In this case, the e-mails were configured to appear as if they were sent by a university employee.

When OTS deletes a virus, an e-mail is still sent in an effort to notify you that someone attempted to send you a message with a suspicious attachment. The virus is removed and replaced with a text file that provides further information about the disinfecting action.

Please note: opening these notification e-mails and their attachments will not spread a virus to your or other’s computers.

Please ensure your computers are up-to-date with the latest anti-virus software. Most campus computers are automatically updated. TU faculty, staff and students can also go to {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/ots/faculty/downloads/welcome.asp} to download McAfee anti-virus software for home use.

If you have additional questions, please contact the OTS Help Center, x4-5151 or {helpcenter@towson.edu}.
