The Towson University Police Department was recently informed of a telephone scam known as the ?809 Area Code Scam.? The scam, via e-mails, phone calls and Web pages, directs individuals to call numbers beginning with the area codes 809, 284, and 876. If you receive or come across such a solicitation, do not respond.
The 809 area code is located in the British Virgin Islands and can be used in the form of a ?Pay Per Call.? Those calling the area codes listed above could be charged $2,425 per minute if calling from the United States. These calls are not covered by US regulations of 900 numbers, which require that you be notified and warned of charges and rates.
