An e-mail claiming to be from the State Employees Credit Union of Maryland was recently sent to several university account holders attempting to obtain TU employees? personal information for the purpose of verifying account information. Please be aware that this e-mail is a phishing scam that is not endorsed by the SECU; it does not relate in any way to the current Open Enrollment period for State benefits.
If you receive this e-mail, delete it immediately and do not provide any personal information. Please note that the e-mail has been sent to university employees regardless of whether they are SECU members or not.
Phishing involves the use of seemingly legitimate e-mail messages and Web sites to deceive customers into disclosing private information, such as bank account numbers, Social Security numbers, credit card numbers, passwords, etc. Bank logos, Web links and graphics are used to mislead e-mail recipients. Some customers could mistakenly submit financial and personal information to the perpetrator who will use it to gain access to financial records or accounts, commit identity theft or engage in other illegal acts. The body of the SECU scam message reads:
?Dear State Employees Credit Union customer,
To protect your account, State Employees Credit Union has one of the most advanced security systems in the world and our anti-fraud teams regularly screen the State Employees Credit Union system for unusual activity.
We recently have determined that different computers have tried to login into your State Employees Credit Union account. If this is not completed by June / 15 / 2005 we will be forced to suspend your account indefinitely until your renewed data is verified. IF YOU ARE A CLIENT OF ANY State Employees Credit Union BANK PLEASE UPDATE:
To get started please CLICK HERE to update your billing records .
