University to Implement Energy Conservation Measures

The university is experiencing the effect of rapid increases in the cost of natural gas and fuel oil across the nation due to electric deregulation. To manage fluctuating costs, energy conservation measures will be implemented beginning with Thanksgiving recess. Your cooperation is vitally important to manage the utility cost escalation.

The President?s Council has reviewed and approved the following energy conservation measures:

* During the heating season, thermostats will be set at 68 degrees.

* During the heating season, thermostats in non-residential facilities will be set back to 62 degrees at night. The timing of night set-back and morning recovery will vary by type of building. For example, facilities with evening classes or activities will have a later set-back time than an office building.

* Evening and weekend activities will be consolidated to as few facilities as possible. Please contact Event and Conference Services at 410-704-2315 to coordinate your activities.

*The use of space heaters is prohibited for safety in addition to energy conservation.

*During holiday closings, all facilities, with the exception of occupied student housing, animal quarters, sensitive research, athletic activities, etc., will have temperatures set to 62 degrees. Please note that the university will be closed Thursday, Nov. 25 and Friday, Nov. 26 for the Thanksgiving holiday and Wednesday, Dec. 22 to Sunday, Jan. 2 for the winter holiday.

You can also help by turning off lights if you are the last person leaving an office, classroom, student residence, etc.

Thank you for your help. If you have questions, please contact your vice president.
