Software Tip of the Week

Microsoft Excel 2003: Freeze Excel Column and Row Titles

When you work with a lot of data in Excel, it can be difficult to remember exactly what kind of data columns or rows contain once you begin scrolling around the sheet. Fortunately, you can freeze rows and/or columns so you can always see your column or row headings when you scroll down or to the right.

To freeze a row that contain your data?s column headings, select the desired Excel row number (e.g., row 1 or rows 1-3). Then, select Window > Freeze Panes from the menu bar. Excel inserts a thin line to show you where the frozen pane begins.

To freeze a column, select the desired Excel column heading (e.g., column A or column A-B). Then, select Window > Freeze Panes from the menu bar. Excel inserts a thin line to show you where the frozen pane begins.

Note: should you save and close the spreadsheet with the Freeze Panes feature turned on, the feature will be turn on when you open the workbook again.

To turn off the Freeze Panes feature to make the spreadsheet scrollable again, select Window > Unfreeze Panes from the menu bar.
