The Office of Technology Services (OTS) receives many individual requests to update popular Windows applications, notably Adobe Acrobat Reader and QuickTime.
We’re pleased to announce immediate availability of newer versions of these software applications for faculty and staff office computer systems, for many smart classroom systems, and for university notebook computers. If you don’t use these applications, you don’t have to upgrade at this time.
For those who do want to upgrade, see this document for self-service installation instructions: {http://www.towson.edu/otstraining/documentation/Windows/Add_Remove_Programs.pdf}
Previously, upgrading these applications required people to obtain Local Administrator Rights on their computer system from our Help Center, through a local IT provider, or through perpetual rights. The new procedure does not require Local Administrator Rights, which helps enhance the overall security of your computer system
Three packages are currently available through Add/Remove Programs:
1. Adobe Acrobat 7.08. While Version 8 was just released by Adobe, OTS will be testing it to ensure it’s stable and works well with our campus systems. The new version will be available once testing is complete.
2. Apple QuickTime 7.1.3 for Windows
3. Internet Explorer 7. Because of its enhanced security features, this will be a mandatory installation beginning January 18, 2007. Additional information is available at {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/applications/dailydigest/databases/news/20061208_041026PM_avoith_1552.asp}
The instructions document will direct you to click Add/Remove Programs > Add Programs. It will take a few moments to build the list of available programs and you’ll see a message “Searching the network…” If the products don’t show up in the list, contact the OTS Faculty/Staff Help Center at 410-704-5151.
Additional products, updates, and “early adopter” packages will be distributed through this new method, so stay tuned to the Daily Digest.
