Phishing Alert-Threat of releasing a non-existent video if you don’t pay the scammers

Don’t fall for it! The Office of Information Security in the Office of Technology Services warns about a recent phishing scam targeting students, faculty and staff.

About the scam
This scam is sent from an email address ending in ‘bol.com.br’ and is written using poor grammar. It threatens that a virus has been installed on your computer, which will release a non-existent video of you to your contacts unless you pay Bitcoin currency in a certain amount of time. There are no links in these emails, instead there is a Bitcoin address for depositing the online funds.

What to do if you get phished
If you think you may have received this scam in your TU gmail account (students) or towson.edu (faculty/staff):

  • do not reply back to the email
  • forward it to phishing@towson.edu
  • delete the email from your inbox
