A Message from the Provost
Associate Professor of Spanish Leticia I. Romo has been appointed as the Provost’s Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion for the 2016-2017 academic year. The charge of the Provost Fellow for Diversity and Inclusion is to play a leadership role in the University’s efforts to diversify the faculty and the student body and assist in continuing efforts to provide an inclusive and respectful campus community.
Leticia came to Towson University in 2006 as an adviser for first-year, transfer, and international students, as well as those pursuing a major or minor in Spanish, Latin American Studies, and International Studies. As a result of her experience with students from different backgrounds, she has been invited to participate as a reviewer of applications for the Honors College and serves as a mentor for Latino students. Her commitment to students has been a constant in her academic career, and goes beyond the classroom. As an alumna of Sweet Briar College, she was invited to participate on their diversity committee to assist in diversifying their student body. In this capacity, she advocated for international students who were going to receive scholarships to attend Sweet Briar. She lobbied so that they would receive appropriate counseling and logistical help not only before coming to the United States, but also during and after their studies. This effort helped students understand the practical and academic values that a foreign diploma would have in their own country after their return, or the opportunities and obstacles they would face if they were to decide to stay in this country. Above all, she advocated for fairness and honesty. As a result of her experience as an adviser, she was invited to participate as a faculty mentor for the Moore Undergraduate Research Apprentice Program (MURAP) while working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The main objective of MURAP is to increase the number of minority students pursuing graduate degrees. The program focused on guiding students from the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts in conducting research and creative activity.
We are excited to welcome Leticia to the provost fellowship.
