Mapping Participation and Community Activity While Aging in Place

Faculty and graduate students in the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science are conducting research about experiences of aging in place, particularly how older adults participate in the activities they need to do and want to do on a routine basis.

We are recruiting volunteers to participate in a Baltimore County-based research study about the way older adults (70+ years) engage in daily activities in their community, and what aspects of the community support people as they “age in place”. In order to include a broad range of experiences, we are particularly hoping to reach participants who:

– face some challenges in their day-to-day lives – physical, social, financial, or otherwise; and/or
– have lived in Baltimore County, and/or their current home, for an extended period of time.

Participants will be interviewed, complete short assessments, and will be provided with small GPS units to create maps of their daily lives. Participants must be able to communicate in English, but do not need to be able to drive. This study is voluntary, and will take approximately 5-6 hours over the course of several weeks. The Towson University Institutional Review Board has approved this study.
