Columbus’ Book of Privileges: The Claiming of a New World

Date: Wednesday, September 17, 6:00 to 7:30pm

Place: Loch Raven Room, University Union

Come and celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by hearing John W. Hessler’s talk entitled “The Height of the Law, The Height of Injustice: Columbus’ Book of Privileges and the Spanish Claims on the New World.”  Hessler is the Curator of the Jay I. Kislak Collection of the Archaeology and History of the Early Americas at the Library of Congress and co-author of Columbus’ Book of Privileges: The Claiming of a New World.  An assemblage of legal documents between King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain and Christopher Columbus, the “Book of Privileges” laid the foundation for the exploration and conquest of the New World, irrevocably changing the course of the Americas’ history.

This event is co-sponsored by the Center for Student Diversity, the Foreign Languages Department, and the Latin American and Latino/a Studies Program.
