Update on “Key Word” Matches in the Towson University Google Search

An update on requesting key word matches for the university’s Google search appliance:

A key word match is a search term that is “hard-wired” to deliver a specific search result for a specific term.

OTS and the digital strategy team of University Marketing and Communications recently audited current key word matches in the university’s Google search appliance. The team has found that the system is currently burdened with too many key word matches that are no longer needed. As a result, the following guidelines for key word match requests have been developed:

  • Key word matches will not be created for searches that currently appear in the top 5 results.
  • Related queries will be encouraged, wherever possible, in place of key word matches. An example of a related query is the phrase “You can also try (suggested search term).”
  • Key word matches will be considered only for pages that are high-priority communications that have not been indexed by the Google search appliance.
