Separate One Large Cell into Separate Cells

You may want to separate one large cell into two separate cells for sorting purposes. For example, you may want to separate a cell containing someone’s full name into two separate fields – one of those fields containing the first name and the other containing the last name. This will give you the ability to sort on either the last name field or the first name field.

1. Insert a blank column to the right of the large cell.
2. Select the cell you want to separate.
3. Click the Data tab on the Ribbon.
4. Click the Text to Columns button in the Data Tools group.
5. Make sure Delimited is chosen and click Next.
6. Choose the delimiter (Tab, Semicolon, etc) and click Next.
7. Choose the format (General, text, etc) and click Finish.
