Women’s Lacrosse Championship Set For This Weekend

Top-seeded Maryland, No. 2 Syracuse, No. 6 Virginia and No. 5 Northwestern each won their NCAA quarter-final games on Saturday and will compete for the 2014 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse National Championship at Johnny Unitas ® Stadium this weekend.

The semi-final games will be Friday, May 23 at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The national championship contest will take place on Sunday, May 25 at 8:30 p.m.

The No. 1 seeded Terrapins advanced to their 22nd national championship weekend with a 15-6 win over Duke in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Maryland captured the 2010 NCAA national championship at Unitas Stadium with a 13-11 win over Northwestern. Maryland will face No. 5 Northwestern in the semifinals Friday night, a rematch of their 2010 championship game match.

The Wildcats earned their spot in the semifinals with a dramatic 12-11 overtime win over No. 4 Florida on Saturday. Northwestern, which lost to Florida twice this season, earned its 10th consecutive appearance in the national semi-finals with the win. The Wildcats captured the national championship at Towson in 2008 and 2009.

No. 6 Virginia upset defending national champion North Carolina, 10-9. This will be Virginia’s first appearance in the national semifinals since 2007. Virginia will face No. 2 Syracuse in the semifinals on Friday night.

The Orange earned an 11-9 win over No. 7 Boston College on Saturday to advance to the national semifinals. Syracuse will be making its third straight appearance in the national semifinals.
