Excel 2013 Tip: Freezing Worksheet Panes

FreezePane

Freezing panes allows you to keep certain rows or columns on your screen at all times. This is especially helpful when adding information to a datasheet, which is very large.

Freezing the Top Row

1. Make sure the row that you want to stay at the top of the window is the first visible row in the window.
2. Click View tab on the Ribbon.
3. From the Window group, click Freeze Panes. A drop down menu will appear. Choose Freeze Top Row.

Freezing the First Column

1. Make sure the column that you want to stay on the left of the window is the first visible column in the window.
2. Click View tab on the Ribbon.
3. From the Window group, click Freeze Panes. A drop down menu will appear. Choose Freeze First Column.

Note: This will reset the Freeze Top Row command and vice versa.

Freezing both Rows and Columns

1. Click in the cell which is located directly below and directly to the right of the row and columns you wish to freeze. For example, if you wish rows 1 & 2 to be frozen and columns 1 & 2 to be frozen, click in cell C3.
2. Click View tab on the Ribbon.
3. From the Window group, click Freeze Panes. A drop down menu will appear. Choose Freeze Panes.

Unfreeze Panes

1. Click View tab on the Ribbon.
2. From the Window group, click Freeze Panes. A drop down menu will appear. Choose Unfreeze Panes.
