Click It or Ticket: TU seatbelt checkpoints November 18-20

Effective October 1, 2013, Maryland’s new seat belt law requires EVERY passenger in a moving vehicle (including rear seat passengers) to be secured with a seat belt or child safety restraint. This new law is a primary seat belt law for front seat occupants AND a secondary seat belt law for back seat occupants. Tickets can be issued to drivers and front seat passengers even if no other violation is observed. Each person that is not buckled up may receive a ticket of $83.

TU is joining Maryland’s Click It or Ticket campaign to promote seatbelt awareness this November. The Towson University Police Department (TUPD) will conduct seatbelt checkpoints on campus from Monday, November 18 through Wednesday, November 20. At the checkpoints, TUPD officers will check vehicles for occupants’ seatbelt usage and may issue citations for any violations observed. The checkpoints will not interfere with the flow of traffic into and exiting university roadways, garages and parking lots, however all motor vehicles should be alert and obey the traffic commands given by the police officers at these checkpoints. Messaging on the university’s electronic roadway signs will remind motorists to “click it or ticket” beginning November 12.

Any inquiries regarding the checkpoint should be directed to the Community Outreach Officer, Corporal Kia Williams, at 410-704-5622 or kdwilliams@towson.edu.
