Alan Britt, Department of English, was honored when 14 of his poems were translated into Hungarian by Paul Sohar. Along with an introduction to Britt, his poems appeared as a special feature in the popular Irodalmi Jelen journal distributed throughout Romania, Hungary and Europe in general. College of Education

Richard E. Vatz, Instructional Leadership and Professional Development, appeared on Fox News nationally October 17 and 18 to comment on the politics and rhetoric of the government shutdown.  He also appeared on WMAR-TV’s “Square Off” October 20 to discuss the shutdown and the location of responsibility in the accompanying rhetoric, and on Jimmy Mathis’s WBAL show October 19 to discuss Doug Gansler’s entering the Maryland gubernatorial race, his “back seat driving” during drives in his official car, and his nomination of Del. Jolene Ivey for Lieutenant Governor.

College of Health Professions

Cyrus Engineer, Office of Collaborative Programs, was honored as the recipient of the Knowledge for the World Award at Johns Hopkins for his work as the Country Director for the Johns Hopkins University offices in Kabul, Afghanistan.

Tamara Burton, Office of Collaborative Programs, presented “Sleep Patterns in Young Adults on the Autism Spectrum” at the Maryland/DC Society for Respiratory Care Conference by the Sea 2013– 33rd Annual Symposium and Exhibition and Conference in Ocean City, MD.

Marlene Riley, Occupational Therapy & Occupational Science Department, received the Maryland Occupational Therapy Association’s 2013 Recognition of Excellence for Outstanding Contributions to the Field of Occupational Therapy.

Marlene Riley, Jacqueline Wilson and Lisa Crabtree, Occupational Therapy & Occupational Science Department, presented their research “Utilization of an Integrated Level I Fieldwork Model in a Community Practice Setting” at the Maryland Occupational Therapy Annual Conference in Baltimore, MD.

Margaret McCormick, Nursing Department, presented “A Systematic Review of the Literature for Placebo Surgery” at the Society of Clinical Research Associates in New Orleans, LA.

 

Staff Kudos

Kristi Yowell, Associate Director of Human Resources, was appointed to the Public Policy Committee of the College and University Association for Human Resources (CUPA-HR).  Kristi also serves on the urban Scholars Program committee through the independent College Fund of Maryland, which awards deserving students a scholarship and access to workshops and programs to support successful graduations for urban students.  For more information regarding this program, go to http://www.i-fundinfo.org/scholarships/urban-scholars-program.html.

Randy Peaker, HR Associate, was recognized at the State Employee’s Credit Union (SECU) annual luncheon as the Ambassador of the Year for effectively providing SECU materials to the campus community.
