April 21- 27, 2013, is National Victims’ Rights Week. TUPD, along with other law enforcement agencies across the country, is promoting victims’ rights and honoring crime victims and those who advocate on their behalf.
On Wednesday, April 24, from 7 to 9 p.m., in the University Union Potomac Lounge, TUPD will host its second annual “I’m A Survivor” event. This year’s keynote speaker is Mildred Muhammad, a domestic violence survivor with a story for the world. Many recognize her name because of her connection to her former husband, John Allen Muhammad, the convicted and now executed DC sniper who terrorized the District metro region in late 2002. Most are not aware that the reasons for the horrific attacks on innocent children, women and men originated from his stalking and other control tactics he used on Mildred, who he was seeking to find. After several years of silence, Mildred speaks openly about her day-to-day experiences as a survivor of domestic violence and how it affected her three children. She is also the author of a book titled “Scared Silent.”
Come hear Ms. Muhammad and other presentations about relationship violence, sexual assault, alcohol/drug abuse, emotional abuse and other personal struggles. Speakers will briefly describe their personal stories of survival in an open, intimate and powerful event.
