The Honors College is soliciting proposals for Honors College seminars that will be taught Fall 2006 and Spring 2007. These seminars will be one-semester courses offered for three credits and will be designed to enable students and faculty to examine areas that are not usually part of regular departmental offerings. Honors College seminars should be rigorous and allow for in-depth study of fundamental issues, ideas, topics, or problems that are writing-intensive.
Since students in these seminars will be drawn from all areas of the University, the Honors College encourages proposals for courses that are intellectually challenging but do not require a large number of discipline-specific prerequisites. To accommodate the range of Honors students, priority will be placed on creating seminars each semester that fulfill a range of different General Education requirements and/or department electives that come from differing departments. In addition, priority will be placed on courses that adopt innovative pedagogical approaches (e.g., team teaching, service learning, field trips / work, simulations, role-playing). The Honors College also supports faculty members who wish to investigate interdisciplinary topics, perhaps in conjunction with a colleague from a different department, or to explore new areas of academic interest.
The Honors College will award the Faculty member, as reimbursement, $1,000 to be used for State-allowable professional development expenses such as travel, subscriptions, and supplies throughout the fiscal year when the course proposal is approved and the syllabus is first developed. In addition, departments who offer these seminars will receive compensation to their part-time faculty budget at the rate of a 3 credit course to replace the full time faculty member teaching in the Honors College.
An application and a one to two page proposal (download application at {http://www.towson.edu/honors} are due 15 December 2005, and should be submitted to Maria Fracasso, Dean, The Honors College. I would be glad to speak with interested faculty members concerning either the proposal or crafting the course itself {fracasso@towson.edu / x44677}.
