A Talk By Francis “Skip” Fennell, President-Elect of NCTM

The Math Ed Club and the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics are proud to announce a talk to be given by Francis “Skip” Fennell on Wednesday, April 27, from 3:45 to 5:10 in the Stephens Hall Auditorium. The title of his speech is “Highly Qualified Teachers and Other Things!” He will be talking about the challenges of preparing “highly qualified” teachers in mathematics, as well as what it takes to retain these teachers. In addition he will be addressing curriculum, assessment, and other challenges in mathematics education today.

Dr. Francis (Skip) Fennell is a professor of mathematics education at McDaniel College in Western Maryland. He is the President-Elect of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and was a member of the writing team for the Principles and Standards of School Mathematics (NCTM, 2000). He has authored numerous articles, books, and textbook series; he also has created materials for both students and teachers. He is a former Program Officer of instructional materials and teacher enhancement within the Division of Elementary, Secondary, and Informal Education at the National Science Foundation (NSF). He has received numerous awards for his outstanding work in the field of mathematics education including the Glenn Gilbert Award (from the National Council of Supervisors of Mathematics), Outstanding Educator of the Year (from the Maryland Council of Teachers of Mathematics), and Professor of the Year by both the Carnegie Foundation and McDaniel College.
