Virginity’s Hidden History: A 2500-Year Look at Our Most Controversial Universal

Hanna Blank, Scholar of the Institute for Teaching and Research on Women

To paraphrase P. T. Barnum, there?s a virgin born every minute. But are all virginities created equal? Have we always thought about virginity the way we do now? Is virginity really a construct of the Catholic Church, or does it have an existence that transcends and ecedes Christianity? Just what makes a person a virgin, anyway?and has the definition always been the same? Is enforced virginity necessarily repressive of women?s interests? What role does virginity play in the history of women?s lives in the Western world, and how and why has it changed over time?

The event will be held Tuesday, November 9, 2004 from 3:00p.m. to 4:30p.m. in Room 309/310 of the University Union.

We look forward to seeing you there!
