Attention Faculty and Students Using Human Subjects in Research

Students, Faculty and Staff Researchers and Research Advisors

When research involves collection of data from or about human participants, it is necessary that the investigator(s) obtain approval from the Towson’s Institutional Review Board (IRB) before beginning data collection. IRB policies are in place to protect the research subjects, investigators, advisors, and the University and its professional staff from potential liability caused by issues that may arise with human subjects research. IRB review of projects is mandated by federal human subjects regulations, as well as the USM and TU policy. IRB Approval must be given to generalizable research conducted by or on Towson University faculty, staff, and student researchers.

The Office of University Research Services (OURS) endeavors to make the approval process as smooth as possible for students, faculty, staff, and faculty advisors. IRB applications are available both online and in the OURS office, and investigators are encouraged to contact the office with any questions or comments about the application process. If you are unsure if your project needs to go through the IRB, please contact the administrative office at (410) 704-5064, or you may email {jtoll@towson.edu}.

In addition, students or faculty considering participating in research studies advertised on campus or elsewhere are strongly encouraged to inquire after the IRB status of the project before agreeing to participate.
