On Friday, October 1, 2010 the Department of Geography & Environmental Planning will be hosting the 2010-2011 “What Matters” Lecture series and Happy Hour: Our discussion and presentation entitled “Urban Renewal and Municipal Revitalization in Curitiba, Parana, Brazil” will be led by Dr. Hugh Schwartz, Independent Consultant, Alexandria, VA.

Dr. Schwartz received an A.B. in government and economics from Cornell University and began at Columbia Law School before leaving to serve in the U. S. Army, where he was a Guided Missile Launching Platoon Officer. Afterwards, he received an M.A. and Ph.D. in economics from Yale. He taught at Yale, Kansas and Case Western Universities, and served as an economist in the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) for many years, teaching part-time at American University while at the IDB. Subsequently, he was a Fulbright Lecturer in Economics in Uruguay (The University of the Republic) and Brazil (The Federal University of Parana), in both cases, invited to stay on for several years as a Visiting Professor. In addition, he was a Visiting Professor in the Department of Finance at the Technological Institute of Monterrey in Mexico. He has consulted for the IDB, The World Bank, the United Nations and the Uruguayan National Association of Manufacturers. In Uruguay, he collaborated with key members of the current administration.
