The 7th Annual College of Liberal Arts Foreign Film Series entitled ?Re-Imagining Brazil? will be offering a lecture entitled ?Solidarity Economy & Recycling Co-ops in S?o Paulo: Micro-credit to Alleviate Poverty? by Dr. Jutta Gutberlet on Monday, April 19, 2010 at 3:30pm in Linthicum 100.
Dr. Gutberlet comes to us from the Department of Geography at the University of Victoria, Canada. Her research interest lies within sustainable livelihoods and community-based development with specific attention to co-management and poverty reduction. Increasingly her focus is on issues related to quality of life, consumption and waste in Latin America. Her most recent work is committed to unravel the social, economic, environmental and political facets of informal recycling; pointing towards an integrated solid waste management model with social and economic inclusion, based on co-operation as guiding principle for a healthy community. Her research is action and community-based oriented and applies focus group discussions, video, participatory appraisals, and community mapping. Her recently published book: Recycling Citizenship, recovering resources: Urban poverty reduction in Latin America; published in 2008 by Ashgate brings together research findings on the potential embedded in ?wasting no waste? and on inclusive waste management as a pathway towards more sustainable urban development.
Dr. Gutberlet founded the Community-Based Research Laboratory (CBRL) in 2006, and has been researching recycling co-ops in collaboration with the University of Santo Andr
