Maryland Writing Project Conference: Learning and the Brain: Engage Their Brains ? Ignite Their Learning, Part II

Mark your calendars for the Maryland Writing Project?s fall conference: Learning and the Brain: Engage their brains ? Ignite their learning, Part 2, to be held in the University Union Chesapeake Rooms on Saturday, October 10, 2009. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Judy Willis, is a board-certified pediatric neurologist and a middle school teacher. Dr. Willis?s research connects learning-centered brain research to classroom teaching strategies.

Afternoon speakers will include the following experts on learning and the brain:

? Thomas Baumgardner, Ph.D., a neuropsychologist, will talk about the teenage brain.

? Suzie Henneman, M.A., a dance specialist with the Baltimore County Public Schools and trained by the Brain/Gym Group, will give a presentation on the brain/body connection.

? M. Layne Kalbfleisch, Ph.D., principal investigator and Professor of Cognitive Neuroscience at the Krasnow Institute at George Mason University, will present her findings on the relationship between talent and disability. Dr. Kalbfleisch has pioneered methods for better representing “real world” cognition in the artificial functional MRI environment. Her most recent book is The Neural Plasticity of Giftedness.

? Frank Kros, MSW, JD, a career child advocate, has served as a childcare worker, consultant, college professor, attorney, writer and speaker. Mr. Kros is the executive vice president of The Children?s Guild, one of the largest private providers of special education services in Maryland. In his presentation, Mr. Kros will describe damage that occurs in the developing brain that’s been exposed to poverty, the impact of that damage in the classroom, and interventions that can be used to overcome poverty’s effects.
