Jeanne Safer begins her most recent book, Death Benefits: How Losing a Parent Can Change an Adult?s Life ? For the Better (Basic Books, 2008), with a sentence reviewers have called ?shocking,? ?taboo-breaking,? and nearly a ?sacrilege?: ?The death of your parents can be the best thing that ever happens to you.? Yet as the AARP Bulletin affirms (and who should be more alert to the implications of such declarations?) ?the message is in fact overwhelmingly positive.? For an adult, Dr. Safer argues, losing a parent can open up opportunities for coming to terms, for making choices, and for transforming lives.
