The ninth-seeded Tigers (12-17, 7-11) will take on the eighth-seeded Pride of Hofstra (12-17, 8-10) this Friday at 12 noon in the opening round of the 2008 Colonial Athletic Association Men’s Basketball Championship to be held at the Richmond Coliseum in Richmond, Va. The Tigers’ impressive 89-74 victory over Delaware in Saturday’s regular season finale lifted Towson to the ninth-seed. The winner of Friday’s contest advances to the quarterfinal to meet top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth (23-6, 15-3) on Saturday at noon.
Towson and Hofstra split during the regular season, each winning at home. The Tigers beat the Pride 60-51 in the Towson Center but lost to Hofstra in Hempstead, 81-67.
Following the tournament tipoff game between the Tigers and Pride on Friday, #5 William and Mary (14-15, 10-8) meet #12 Georgia State (9-20, 5-13) at 2:30 p.m. A pair of long-time rivals face off at 6 p.m. as #7 Delaware (13-16, 9-9) meets #10 Drexel (12-19, 5-13), followed by #6 Northeastern (13-16, 9-9) versus #11 James Madison (13-16, 5-13) at 8:30 p.m.
Quarterfinal action begins at noon on Saturday when top-seeded VCU takes on the Hofstra/Towson winner, followed by #4 Old Dominion (17-14, 11-7) against the William & Mary/Georgia State winner at 2:30 p.m. At 6 p.m., second-seeded UNC Wilmington (19-12, 12-6) takes on the Delaware/Drexel winner, followed by #3 George Mason (20-10, 12-6) versus the Northeastern/JMU winner at 8:30 p.m.
The two semifinal games will be played at 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 9, with the CAA Championship game set for 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 10.
