Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum awards two community outreach grants

The Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum has awarded two grants to benefit the Towson University- the TU Summer Reading Clinic in Cherry Hill and the Building STEPS program, each a grant for programs that will benefit local elementary, middle- and high-school students.

The Towson University Reading Clinic will use its $8,000 grant to support a Summer Reading Clinic in Baltimore?s Cherry Hill community. The clinic will purchase and install a computerized comprehensive reading test and purchase books and materials for students and teachers in two Cherry Hill community schools ? Dr. Carter G. Woodson Elementary/Middle School and Cherry Hill Elementary/Middle School.

?Thanks to the Mid-Atlantic CIO Forum, we can fund the technology component of our summer 2007 clinic, providing a practicum experience to TU students pursuing their Master of Education in Reading as well as bringing a valuable service to the Cherry Hill community,? says Elizabeth Dicembre, Reading Clinic director.

Building STEPS will use its $4,000 grant to bring technology directly to forty bright, underserved high school students at Digital Harbor, Dunbar and Woodlawn High Schools. Each student will receive a handheld Personal Digital Assistant (PDA) as a means to encourage thinking ?technologically? and to improve organization skills as students juggle school, extracurricular activities, part-time jobs and the upcoming college application process.

?Our students must recognize technology as a practical tool, not something they sign up for at school,? says Debra Hettleman Plant, Building STEPS executive director. ?PDAs can change the way students think about technology as they advance academically and professionally,? adds Plant.
