Software Tip of the Week
Microsoft Windows XP: Create desktop shortcuts for commonly used programs
Desktop shortcuts provide quick and easy access to many items on your computer, including programs, files, folders, disk drives, printers and more. They are useful in creating one-click access to programs that are used frequently, such as Microsoft Word and Excel. The steps to create a new desktop shortcut to Microsoft Word are listed below. This process can also be used to create shortcuts for files and folders.
To create a desktop shortcut for Microsoft Word:
1. In Windows, click the Start button.
2. Navigate to Programs > Microsoft Office.
3. In the Microsoft Office group, right-click on Microsoft Office Word 2003. A shortcut menu displays.
4. In the shortcut menu, select Send To > Desktop (create shortcut).
5. If needed, close all menus and windows to see the new shortcut to Microsoft Word on the Desktop. From now on, you can double-click the shortcut icon to start the desired program.
