SOFTWARE TIP OF THE WEEK

Microsoft Excel 2003: Calculate Without Formulas Using AutoCalculate

When working with a list of values (such as expenses) in a spreadsheet, there might be times when you wish to find out the sum but do not need to add a formula. For these instances, use Excel?s built-in AutoCalculate feature.
AutoCalculate is located on the Status bar at the bottom of the Excel working screen and by default displays the SUM of two or more selected cells containing numbers (Note: If the Status bar is not visible, select View > Status bar from the menu bar).

In addition to the SUM calculation, you can choose to display a different calculation such as AVERAGE, MIN, MAX and more. Simply right-click on the SUM formula and then choose a different function from the resulting dropdown list.
