In the endless debate over smoking on campus, both smokers and non-smokers alike agree that cigarette butts and litter don?t do much for campus beauty. This summer, university officials echoed that sentiment by adding an amendment to the university?s Aramark contract to include campus-wide trash and cigarette butt removal. Facilities Support Services Manager Gina Conroy said the contract addition was a no-brainer.
“As a result of the long partnership the university has had with Aramark Facility Services to provide housekeeping and recycling services, it was only natural to extend our partnership and have them provide waste and cigarette litter removal on campus,” Conroy said.
Aramark?s ongoing relationship with the university enabled quick implementation of the program. By July Aramark had formed a team of employees that arrive on campus at 6:30 a.m. to empty outside trash containers and pick up cigarette butts and litter. Campus Aramark manager Joe Howze says the team works together to target specific areas where butts are typically thrown.
?We divide the campus into three zones and then focus on the areas with the most litter in those zones,? Howze said. ?Areas surrounding building entrances and high-traffic walkways are typically the worst.?
