Parking Notice: Handicapped Parking Tips

In its continued effort to better serve the campus community, Parking Services has compiled the information below for individuals who utilize handicapped parking.

Did You Know:

? Handicapped spaces are located in almost all lots on campus. Lots that don?t have handicapped spaces are in remote locations and additional spaces have been added in other lots that provide better access. Please refer to the interactive map at {http://www.towson.edu/main/maps/campusmap/index.html} for additional information.
? Handicapped permits are valid in all non reserved spaces in the Glen Ave/Lot 2 area next to Stephens Hall. Individuals with a valid handicapped permit/plate may park in any handicapped space as well as regular visitor spaces in this area.
? Individuals with a valid handicapped permit/plate may park in any handicapped parking space in an un-gated lot despite restrictions associated with their University parking permit. For example, a commuter student with a valid handicapped permit may park in handicapped space in the un-gated Faculty/Staff area of the Glen garage, and vice versa.
? Parking Services at its discretion may grant exceptions for non-faculty/staff who are eligible to use handicapped permits/plate to park in Faculty/Staff lots. If granted, there is an additional cost for the gate access card.
? Towson University permits are still required during posted enforcement hours, even when parking in a handicapped space. The handicapped permit provides access?it does not negate the cost associated with parking.
? Maryland law allows individuals who have handicapped permits/plates to park at a single space meter for up to 2 times the meter time limit without paying. For example, if the meter has a 30 minute limit, those with handicapped permits/plates may park for 1 hour without paying. After this time the vehicle must be moved or the meter paid. This law does not apply to parking in a lot that is controlled by a central pay station.
? If you are transporting a person who is authorized to use handicapped permits/plates, they MUST be in the vehicle when it is parked. If you are the driver and you drop the person off, you may not park in a handicapped space.

Enforcement Information:
? In order to help ensure the availability of handicapped spaces for authorized individuals, Parking Services performs random checks of DMV records and registration information. Those found to be abusing the use of handicapped permits/plates are subject to a $300 fine, fraud charges, towing, and referral to Judicial affairs (if applicable).
? Many states require handicapped permit/plate holders to carry DMV/MVA documentation at all times. Please be prepared to present this information if it is requested by a University Official.
? Help us to help you, if you suspect abuse, please notify Parking Service so we can research the information and address it in the appropriate fashion.
