How to Respond to an Emergency: Stay in Place or Evacuate?

When an emergency occurs, it is often necessary to stay where you are (also known as sheltering in place) or evacuate. Follow the direction of emergency personnel or use your best judgement to determine which response method is appropriate for the situation at hand.

When you are required to shelter in place (often in the case of hazmat disasters), you should:

– Bring all family members and pets indoors.
– Close and lock all windows and doors to the outside.
– Turn off the heating/air conditioning system and close all vents.
– Close fireplace dampers.
– Seal gaps around air conditioners, doors and windows with plastic sheeting or other airtight material.
– Close drapes and shades, and stay away from windows.
– Remain in place until officials broadcast that it is safe to leave.
– If you cannot seal the entire home, close internal doors and move to the most central room in the home. Seal it as instructed above.

When you are required to evacuate, you should:

– Monitor TV and radio news for instructions from local authorities. Evacuation routes will vary depending on the nature and location of the emergency.
