The American with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) requires that all programs and events at Towson University be accessible. When planning conferences, events and activities, the department should designate a particular person to be responsible for handling requests for accommodations. In registration brochures, invitations, or fliers, use a statement such as:
“For disability-related accommodations, please contact [name, department, address, phone number, e-mail] at least 2 or more weeks before the event to allow sufficient time to make necessary arrangements.”
Publications, such as course materials, college bulletins, program brochures, newsletters and instructional publications must be provided in alternative formats (Braille, large print, tape, computer disk) upon request. Disability Support Services at (410) 704-2638 can provide assistance with document conversion. For these publications, use a statement such as:
“This publication/material is available in alternative formats upon request. Please contact [name, department, address, phone number, e-mail].”
Additionally, it is recommended that faculty include an access statement in their syllabi such as:
“If you need an accommodation because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements in case the building must be evacuated, please make an appointment with me as soon as possible.”
