Announcing the Second Annual William Horne Lecture, sponsored by the Department of Electronic Media and Film

Professor James Welsh of Salisbury University will give a talk on “Peter Watkins: Adventures in Faux Documentary” on Monday, November 8. Time: 7:30 PM. Place: Van Bokkelen 204. Two films by Peter Watkins will be screened:

The Forgotten Faces (1961) 17 min.
Culloden (1964) 69 min

Peter Watkins is famous for his experiments with “impossible” documentaries, for example The War Game (1965), an account of what happens when a Soviet nuclear warhead hits Kent, England. Culloden, an equally amazing film, starts from the premise of British television reporters providing live coverage of the Battle of Culloden, 1746. This bloody battle between the England Army and several clans of Highland Scots established English sovereignty in Scotland for hundreds of years. The Forgotten Faces is an earlier film in the same vein, a “documentary” of the Hungarian Revolution of 1956 that was shot entirely in England.

Dr. James Welsh is the author, editor or co-editor of a dozen books. He has been editor of Literature/Film Quarterly for 32 years. Jim has written extensively about Peter Watkins.

William Horne was a much-loved faculty member in EMF. The lecture series honors his wide-ranging intellectual curiosity.

The lecture is free and open to the public. For information, contact Peter Lev, 410-704-3189 or {plev@towson.edu}.
