Dr. Jack Mezirow, Emeritus Professor of Adult Education, Teachers College, Columbia University will give a lecture on Transformative Learning on Wednesday, Oct. 15, at 3:00 p.m. in Chesapeake Rooms I & II. A reception will follow. Please RSVP to Donna Guillott, X43828 if you will attend.
Tranformative Learning refers to the process of bringing into awareness and changing problematic frames of reference – sets of expectations and assumptions that constitute habits of mind, mindsets or meaning perspectives. Transformative Learning recognizes an essential distinction between instrumental and communicative learning and involves critical reflection on assumptions, a critical-dialectic discourse and taking the assessing action. This distinctively adult dimension of learning is essential to a fuller realization of reasoning, automony and democratic citizenship. The role of adult education will be discussed.
