Department of MCCS and TU Speech and Debate Program Unveil the Every Other Wednesday Series

The Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies And the Towson University Speech and Debate Program announce the Every Other Wednesday Series of Townhall Meetings and Public Debates. As firm believers in the power of public discourse to change the course of human events, we invite you as members of the Towson community to come and take part. Each event will feature an opportunity for you to voice your opinion, so come ready to let your voice be heard.

All events are on Wednesdays from 4:00pm to 5:00pm in the Susquehanna Terrace in the University Union.

Our schedule of events and topics is as follows:

On March 1, Gender Wars: Episode Six starts off the series with a lecture and discussion from Dr. Darren C. Goins, Assistant Professor in the Department of MCCS and Director of the TU Speech and Debate Program. Goins’ talk focuses on the current relationship between men and women in the arena’s of education, employment, sports, and entertainment. A lively discussion will surely ensue on this hot topic.

On March 15, China v. the U.S.: Human Rights and Civil Liberties features a public debate on an issue close to the hearts of many members of the Towson Community. Members of the Nationally Ranked Towson University Speech and Debate Program face off against each other in a battle of wits about hypocrisy, labor practices, and regulation of individual liberties in both super power nations.

On March 29, Towson Green Party and Towson Libertarians battle verbally in a debate co-sponsored by the Department of Mass Communication and Communication Studies and the Towson University Speech and Debate Program. The discussion that ensues on the issues raised in this debate have major implications on the state of Maryland and the nation.

On April 5, Speak Out: A Speech and Drama Performance Hour members of the Towson University Speech and Debate Program display their talents in an exhibition of oratory and oral interpretation of literature. In a group of students that emphasizes the personal as part of the political, this is sure to be a provocative evening.

On April 19, Towson v. Towson is a debate featuring members of the Towson University Speech and Debate Program in a debate on the issue of gay rights being debated in state houses across the Union. This debate will focus on the underlying issues of how much government do we want in our personal lives.
